Rum Olde Nog

With Christmas very much on the horizon we thought it would be fun to create a delicious festive cocktail using Norfolk’s finest.

The idea really was triggered last year.  Let me explain. Whilst attending the Ely Christmas Fair one of our fellow stall holders who was making hot mulled apple-based drinks purchased our Christmas liqueur and having added it with a heated tart apple juice, 5 minutes later returned to present an absolutely OMG amazing Christmas treat…you’ve gotta try this one folks!!!

A few weeks back I was given my first Whiskey based Nog which I thoroughly enjoyed and had one of those all too few light bulb moments…perhaps we could make something similar using our Dark Spice or Honey Vanilla rums…next call google…well as it happens there are loads of ‘Nog’ recipes available so in a sense we were spoilt for choice. However, having selected one from the Good Food magazine, Caroline and myself set about mixing the ingredients (most of which besides the cream we had to hand). Once completed we left it overnight in our fridge to chill, ready for testing at the next day’s taster event. In general, it was very well received, although a few voiced their concerns about drinking partially cooked egg…and to be honest we shared their views, so it was back to the drawing board…well Google.

Our second attempt, an eggless Nog gained approval from virtually everyone who sampled it and I must admit I did consume a number of ‘tasters’ during the trial…well you have to don’t you. Warning it is disastrous for anyone who is looking to lose a few pounds this Christmas, but if you have a sweet tooth and plan to start shedding a little bit of excess in the New Year…you’ve gotta try our RUM OLDE NOG which one of our trialist’s declared was “Bailey’s with balls!!!”

So here are the ingredients: (for 12 people so reduce qualities to suit)

  • 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 2 cups of rum (Dark Spice or Honey Vanilla)
  • 2 cups whole Cream Milk (Chilled)
  • 2 Cups double cream (Chilled)
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg (optional)*

(*we didn’t include nutmeg in ours)

In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar and rum until smooth. Add milk, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg (Optional) and whisk until well combined. Chill overnight and bingo you are a proud member of the RUM OLDE NOG makers club, enjoy
